Bird Wall - Almost Done

A few weeks ago I spent a night working on my bird wall. (Colin says when I am old I am going to turn into a crazy bird lady. Funny, I think I keep my bird choch-keys in check!) (spelling????)

Anyway...There is very limited wall space in our actual kitchen and we hung the bulletin board on the one wall, leaving only one narrow wall left for art.  I decided a collage effect would be best since it is the most fun.  I wanted it to look like it grew over time as a I found fun prints, even though I did it in one weekend.

It all started when I bought a fun little painting. A REAL painting, I have never bought a real painting before, only prints. It needed a fitting home, and a bird wall is a fitting home.

Colin removed the phone jack for me.  Crazy that we live in a world where you don't need a phone jack in the kitchen...technology blows me away.  (Although the wires are tucked in the wall if we ever change our mind.)

I am always torn between "classy grown up decorating" and "fun colorful decorating".  I often end up mixing, which is what I did in this case.  I considered only simple painting/prints of paintings but I love my tin sign and if I didn't put it on my bird wall in the kitchen, where would I put it?

To lay out the art I used a two step process.  FIRST I measured out an area of the floor the same size as the wall.  I then arranged and re-arranged the frames over and over until I found one or two options I liked.  SECOND I drew examples of each frame & print to scale, so I could tape then on the wall before committing.  Then I went back and forth between the two to get my final design.  By no means do I think I created a master piece, but I think I came out with a decent arrangement given such a narrow wall and many prints the same size.

Pretty sweet right?  Maybe I should sell my sketches on Etsy? HA! : )

I am a white white white girl, but our cabinets are brown..so I went with mostly off white, or antiqued white frames, not bright white frames and I mixed in some brown to match the cabinets. Although I realized once I was done, I need one more brown frame to achieve the right white/brown balance.

I am saying it is "almost done" since I want to replace the white square frame with a brown square frame and I also need one more print to fill in the bottom.

I have ordered the brown frame and one more print (a lady cardinal to dance with all my little robins) and I am just waiting for them to show up in my mailbox!

Shall we take a closer look at the players???

I did not intend to do all robins, but when I scoured the interwebs for cute birds, they were constantly my favorites.  It's my bird wall and I can do what I want.  (Sorry that song has been in my head this week!?! "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to...")

It feels good to get more things on the wall.  It feels like someone lives here now, but it is finally starting to feel like we live here.  And that makes me happy : )

I'll post a few more pictures once it is all done!

  1. LOVE that wall! Nice job!

Do you still have those sketches from the templates?????? Some are really nice - especially the template for print #3. A certain little Birdy may need one in her room :-)

I'll have to chat with Colin about removing a phone jack - we currently have a picture hung on top of ours in our kitchen!
